The number of reports of discrimination to the Discrimination Ombudsman (DO) continues to increase. In a new report, the school receives criticism for doing too little.

During 2023, 3,930 reports were received, compared to 3,594 the previous year. This is evident from the DO's annual discrimination report, which TV4 was the first to report on.

Of the 3,930 reports in 2023, 1,818 concerned discrimination related to disability and 1,293 concerned discrimination related to ethnic affiliation.

Looking at social areas, 29 percent of the reports concerned working life, 22 percent education, and 17 percent goods and services.

The report criticizes schools for not doing enough to combat discrimination and harassment. Of the 856 reports within the education sector in 2023, most concerned primary school and over half concerned discrimination due to disability. The next largest group, 216, concerned ethnic affiliation.

We will now turn to the government to take the initiative for a major knowledge boost, says DO Lars Arrhenius to TV4.

He also points out Afro-Swedish students as a particularly vulnerable group.

It's the n-word, it's racist graffiti, and you get socially excluded or completely frozen out. But there are also serious cases of assault. These are situations that we would never accept in our workplaces, so we can't accept them here either, says Arrhenius.

The total number of reports to DO has increased since 2020, one explanation may be that it became easier to report via DO's website that year.
