Deceived the Municipality of Grants - Wants to Pay Off in 36 Years

By concealing vacation trips and assets, a couple in Eskilstuna received over 433,000 kronor in incorrect benefits. Now they are being sentenced – and plan to pay back 1,000 kronor per month for 36 years, according to Expressen.

It was during a control in the spring of 2023 that the couple showed they had bank accounts that they had not reported when they applied for assistance. Large sums of money had been transferred to these accounts and the couple had, among other things, traveled abroad with their children.

”They are considered to be living at a level that is higher than what a low-income earner in the area is deemed to be able to afford”, the municipality writes in its investigation.

The couple, who received the money paid out over 18 months, is now sentenced to pay it back. According to the verdict, the municipality and the couple have agreed on a payment plan where the couple will pay 1,000 kronor per month – for 36 years.

However, according to the municipality, this is a misunderstanding and is due to an error in their application to the administrative court.

When it comes to such large amounts, it becomes unreasonable, says Simon Brunner from the municipality's group against incorrect payments to the newspaper.

The man in the couple tells Expressen, however, that the agreement applies and that they will pay off the debt at that rate.
