The typhoon Krathon has reached southern Taiwan. For the second day, schools and workplaces are being kept closed due to the bad weather, which has caused two deaths and over 120 injuries. Two people are missing.
The typhoon has caused landslides and flooding. Houses and roads have been damaged in the bad weather that has ravaged the island as the typhoon slowly approaches.
Sustained winds of 35 meters per second and gusts of up to 45 meters per second were measured just before Krathon reached the port city of Kaohsiung at lunchtime on Thursday, according to the Taiwanese weather agency CWA.
The winds are expected to lose strength after making landfall, but residents are being urged to take shelter.
"There will be winds with destructive forces caused by the typhoon in this area. Take shelter as soon as possible", writes CWA in a warning that has been sent several times to residents' mobile phones on Thursday.
In all of Taiwan, nearly 10,000 people have been evacuated, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
At least nine people have also died in a fire at a hospital in Pingtung County, which has been severely affected by the bad weather.
