The price of plastic bags is now being lowered as the tax is being abolished. However, the reduction should be greater, according to the website Matpriskollen, which believes that the food chains should take into account the 75 öre per bag VAT.
"When the tax was introduced in 2020, it was 3 kronor excluding VAT. The VAT on plastic bags is 25 percent, which meant that the store had to charge 3.75 kronor to avoid losing money. Now the price is being lowered by 3 kronor including VAT for the consumer, so the reduction could have been a bit greater. The price should have decreased by 3.75 kronor," writes Matpriskollen's CEO Ulf Mazur in a comment.
Matpriskollen has investigated prices at some of the largest daily goods chains, and almost all of them have chosen to lower the price by exactly 3 kronor.
