Criminal networks earn millions of kronor by deceiving banks by fixing mortgages for payment, reports P4 Stockholm.
"Do you want to become a homeowner, we'll help you even if your annual income is modest." This is how a criminal network markets its services to people who cannot take out a mortgage.
It's widespread, it's something that organized crime engages in and it exists throughout Sweden, says Sara Persson, crime prevention specialist at the Economic Crime Authority, to the radio.
The networks lure people who do not have jobs or cash deposits, and who cannot get a mortgage from the bank. In exchange for payment, they procure fake employment certificates and other forged documents through fake companies. At least 58 couples are said to have been granted loans and bought homes in this way, according to the police.
What we need to do is learn how to exploit the system and actually stop the influx of this criminal activity. We will never be able to investigate and prosecute it all away, says Persson.
