Construction Layoffs Fall by a Third, but Bankruptcies Rise in Sweden

Layoff notices in the construction industry fell by just over a third in the third quarter, while bankruptcies increased compared with the same period last year, according to figures from the Swedish Construction Association.

A total of 1,001 people were laid off between July and September this year. Construction companies are now seeing an improvement in the market.

“The construction labor market continues to improve,” says Johan Deremar, an economist and forecaster at the Swedish Construction Companies, in a press release.

At the same time, the number of bankruptcies rose by four percent in the third quarter and remains high. A total of 337 construction companies went bankrupt during the period. According to the Swedish Construction Association, small businesses are mainly affected - seven out of ten are sole proprietorships.
