Canada wants to shut down the local Tiktok department in the country, citing "national security". In a statement, the Canadian government specifically targets Tiktok's parent company Bytedance establishing a local presence through Tiktok Technology Canada. However, the Tiktok app is not banned in the country.
In the statement, it is stated that users should evaluate the "risk of using social media" when it comes to "how information is protected, handled, used, and shared by foreign actors".
Tiktok says that they intend to contest the decision legally and point out that "shutting down Tiktok's Canadian office and destroying hundreds of well-paid local jobs is not in anyone's interest".
