Austria was one of the EU countries that stopped all Syrian asylum applications after Syria's leader Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December.
"The deportation carried out today is part of a strict and thus fair asylum policy", says Interior Minister Gerhard Karner in a statement.
The Ministry of the Interior states that Austria is the first European country that "officially has deported a Syrian criminal directly to Syria in recent years".
Karner, who belongs to the ruling conservative party ÖVP, promises to "continue on this chosen path with hard work and determination".
