The season's first case of bird flu has been confirmed in an enclosure with pheasants in Kristianstad municipality.
A zone with special restrictions for poultry farms has been established around the facility. The approximately 400 pheasants are being put down and sanitation and infection tracking are underway, according to the National Veterinary Institute (SVA) in a press release.
The Board of Agriculture has also decided on special rules for bird handling in other parts of southern Sweden to reduce the risk of infection spread.
"But even outside the high-risk area, it is important to strengthen infection control to reduce the risk," says Maria Nöremark, deputy state epizootologist at SVA, according to the text.
A swan found dead in Stockholm also carried the infection.
