Singer Barry Manilow himself announced his cancer diagnosis via social media on Monday, TMZ reports.

The 82-year-old Manilow writes in a statement that doctors detected the cancer so early that he will not need chemotherapy.

“As many of you know, I recently went through six weeks of bronchitis followed by a relapse for another five weeks. Even though I had cleared up the bronchitis and was back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my amazing doctor ordered an MRI to make sure everything was okay. The MRI found a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and an amazing doctor) that it was caught so early. That’s the good news.”

The "bad news," according to the "Mandy" singer, is that the surgery will cause him to miss a number of planned concerts in January.
