The Sweden Democrats want to see a total stop for new citizenships pending the introduction of new, stricter rules for citizenship, writes party leader Jimmie Åkesson in a debate article in Aftonbladet.
"One year ago, the question of a moratorium was one of our inputs in the annual renegotiation of the Tidö Agreement. This received no attention whatsoever from any of the government parties", writes Åkesson in his article.
"However, we have recently been informed that Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch believes that the Migration Agency should slow down the issuance of new citizenships."
The government should, however, go further than that, according to the SD leader.
"If the Migration Agency instead were to pause the processing of citizenship applications entirely, we could prevent the issuance of tens of thousands of new citizenships."
The government appointed an inquiry into stricter requirements for Swedish citizenship last autumn. The results of this will be presented in January.
