Threatened schools reopen on Friday

In Ludvika, three intermediate and upper secondary schools were closed on Thursday after the police received information about a potential impending violent act. The threat picture has decreased significantly during the day, says local police area chief Thomas Hellgren at a press conference.

The police have initiated a preliminary investigation.

I will not be able to go into specific details, but our goal is to be able to return to normal as soon as possible, says Hellgren.

The schools, which are all located in the same area and share schoolyards, decided on the closure after the police informed them of a suspected impending violent act.

It is our responsibility as employers and those responsible for the school to ensure that both students and staff have a safe working environment at our schools, says school principal Elisabeth Burman at the press conference.

No suspect has been detained. Otherwise, the police are silent about the matter, but are working intensively with the investigation.

The information was sent out to affected guardians at 5:30 am on Thursday.

We could not wait for more information and were forced to close the school and take the safe option, says David Helsing, safety officer at Ludvika municipality, to TT.

In the morning, the municipality's security coordinator Johan Leopoldsson was on site at the schools together with school staff.

What we are doing now is to catch up with individuals who have not received the message that the school is closed. Then it's about trying to get more information from the police and make a decision on how we will proceed during the morning, he said then.

The schools will be open as usual on Friday, since the police no longer assess that there is a threat to the schools, the municipality announced on Thursday afternoon.
