Climate activists have sprayed orange paint on the prehistoric megalithic stone circle Stonehenge in south-west England.
The vandalism occurred around lunchtime on Wednesday – a day before the summer solstice when thousands of people are expected to visit the mythical stone circle.
Two people have been arrested, according to British police.
According to the organisation behind the action, the stones were painted with a medium that can be easily washed off with water.
Stonehenge was built sometime between 3000 and 1600 BC as a temple, burial ground or astronomical calendar – or perhaps all three functions simultaneously. It is classified as a World Heritage Site by the UN organisation Unesco.
