Hammarby Sjöstad is a residential district around Lake Hammarby. Part of it lies across the canal on Södermalm. Much of the neighborhood was built on the former Lugnet industrial area, and the lake and its surroundings were restored after pollution from industry. Shops and restaurants are among the district’s features.

You can explore the neighborhood and look at its architecture. Visit Stockholm describes buildings with simple shapes and materials, large windows, balconies and higher ceilings. It says the area was planned with an environmental focus, including the use of eco-friendly construction materials.

The project was first proposed as a possible Olympic village for Stockholm’s 2004 Games. Stockholm lost its bid, but construction went ahead. Visit Stockholm dates the neighborhood’s construction to 1994–2020. The city’s project page says the wider area is expected to be complete around 2027. It lists metro tunnels, stations and entrances as part of an expansion whose construction began in 2019, with a stated build time of seven to eight years.

Visit Stockholm lists four Tvärbanan tram stops in Hammarby Sjöstad. The city describes the development as a 200-hectare area, with a system intended to connect water, waste and energy.
