Långholmen is a park on an island in Stockholm, with places to swim, picnic and take part in outdoor activities. The former prison is now a hotel and hostel, and Visit Stockholm says it also has a prison museum. Stora Henriksvik has a small Bellman museum and café; Karlshälls gård is another historic building. Mälarvarvet, a shipyard, is on the island’s eastern side.
The park has swimming beaches, rocky bathing spots, play areas, a sports field and an open-air theatre. It also has allotment gardens, boat piers and places where boats are stored. The city says sledging is popular in the park in winter.
Långholmsparken was laid out around the turn of the 20th century as one of Stockholm’s rocky parks. During dredging of Pålsundet in the 1870s, the rock was covered with soil and about 2,400 trees were planted. The city says six sites on Långholmen have registered cultural remains, including a rock carving and boat remains in the water north of the island. Visit Stockholm says the island was home to a prison from the 18th century until 1974. The material gives no admission prices or visit duration, and does not specify seasonal opening dates for the park or its facilities.
