Rosenborg Castle stands beside Kongens Have in central Copenhagen. It began as Christian IV’s garden retreat: in 1606, he bought land outside the city for a private garden with summerhouses and a moat. A summerhouse that forms the core of the castle was built by 1611. The building was expanded in 1615 and completed in 1624, when Christian IV first used the name Rosenborg for his “big house in the garden”.

The castle now houses the Danish crown jewels. Visitors can see the jewels, crowns and regalia in the treasury below the castle, as well as Christian IV’s audience rooms and bedroom, where he died in 1648. Four Danish kings lived at Rosenborg; rooms are named after the other Oldenburg kings. The Great Hall has 12 woven tapestries made for Christian V between 1685 and 1693, showing his victories in the Scanian War.

The venue offers public guided tours and private tours for larger groups. It also offers educational visits about Danish history from a royal perspective. Buying admission tickets online saves money, according to the venue. Its website describes the castle’s history and visitor facilities, but the information provided here does not specify ticket prices, opening hours or visit length.
