Wanås is a historic estate in northeastern Skåne, where a beech forest surrounds a medieval castle. The castle is private and has been the Wachtmeister family’s home for generations. The estate’s sculpture park has close to 80 permanent, site-specific artworks, set among the forest and in barns. Wanås Konst also presents temporary art projects. The art initiative has been on the site since 1987, and the foundation was established in 1995.

Visitors can explore the sculpture park and drop in to the art workshop. Wanås Konst’s café serves lunch, coffee and ice cream. For dinner or an overnight stay, Wanås Restaurant Hotel occupies two historic 18th-century buildings and has eleven individually decorated rooms. Its restaurant uses seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, including produce from the estate’s organic farm and food gathered from the forest.

The castle was burned down and rebuilt in 1556, largely in its present form. Wanås was once near the border between Denmark and Sweden, and the surrounding area saw fighting in the Danish-Swedish War. The Snapphane oak can still be seen in the park. The estate also includes a large organic dairy farm, which produces milk, beef, grains and root vegetables.
