Founded in 1545, the castle is a Renaissance building in Vadstena, Östergötland, by Lake Vättern. Its museum occupies four floors. The basement has a cannon tower, a cannon passage and a lavatory. On the second floor are a permanent exhibition in the borgstuga, Herreköket, an armoury and a Vadstena Academy costume exhibition. The fourth floor, called the Queen’s floor, includes the queen’s suite, the large and small state halls and the castle church. The third floor has a wedding hall and grand stair hall, which are not accessible during summer because of the Vadstena Academy opera production.
Visitors can take guided tours and see exhibitions. Tours can be thematic or dramatised depending on the season, and groups can book a private tour. The venue also lists events such as medieval days and castle concerts.
