Gripsholm Castle was built in the 16th century at the initiative of King Gustav Vasa, and the venue describes it as home to five hundred years of history. Its rooms include state apartments from the House of Vasa, with preserved interiors from that period. The best-known is Duke Karl’s Chamber.

Gustav III had a theatre installed in one of the castle’s round Renaissance towers. The venue calls it one of Europe’s best-preserved 18th-century theatres. Visitors can see the theatre as well as the state apartments and the Swedish State Portrait Collection. The collection contains paintings of historical figures from Gustav Vasa’s reign to the present day, and the venue describes it as internationally renowned.

Gripsholm’s history spans five centuries, from its construction in the 16th century to a portrait collection that reaches the present day. The castle is close to Hjorthagen Nature Reserve and Mariefred, where visitors can find shops, cafés and restaurants.
