Gustav III’s Pavilion stands in Hagaparken, Solna, and was built in the 1780s as a home for King Gustav III. Architect Olof Tempelman drew up its plans in 1787. Louis Masreliez designed the interiors, which were completed in 1792, the year the king died. Visit Stockholm describes the furnishings and interiors as an example of Gustavian style from the late 18th century, and says much of the original furniture remains in place.
The main draw inside is the state room in the parade suite, decorated in Pompeian style. Interest in Roman antiquity grew in Europe during the 1780s after the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum became famous. Both Gustav III and Masreliez had visited those excavations. The pavilion’s detailed Pompeian decoration contrasts with the more traditional interiors of the period, according to the royal palace website. The palace describes the pavilion as an unusual royal building from the late 18th century in a European context. Its preserved interior can be seen on guided tours during the summer months; Visit Stockholm also says visits are by guided tour only. A visit focuses on the rooms, furnishings and their late 18th-century design.
