The Swedish Glass Museum is part of Småland’s Museum at Södra Järnvägsgatan 2 in Växjö. It covers Swedish glass from the earliest times to contemporary studio glass, with displays about glass, glass art, history and culture. Permanent exhibitions are supplemented by temporary shows that often focus on a designer, glassworks or technique.
The museum’s lower floor is currently closed while a new exhibition is being built. On the upper floor, visitors can see Studioglas i förändring, Hans Frode, gas i glas and Peo Ström, Alsterfors sista supernova.
The collection has more than 45,000 objects. Some are displayed at the museum; most are kept in the museum’s open storage at Kulturarvscentrum Småland. The glass collection grew from five objects in 1929 to more than 7,000 by 1940, as the glass and forest industries of Småland became a focus for the museum. The museum building also houses Småland’s Museum, whose exhibitions cover the cultural history of Kronoberg.
