Prosecutors Seek Seven-Year Sentence for Sarkozy in Libyan Funds Case

French prosecutors want the former President Nicolas Sarkozy to be sentenced to seven years in prison in a trial where he is accused of having received illegal campaign funds from the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Sarkozy was President from 2007 to 2012 and has previously been convicted of, among other things, corruption and is serving a sentence where he wears an electronic ankle tag.

France's highest appellate court has upheld the verdict of, among other things, corruption against former President Nicolas Sarkozy, At the same time, the court ruled that Sarkozy must wear an electronic tag for a year – which is the first time a former head of state in France has been sentenced to such a punishment. Sarkozy is also not allowed to stand in political elections for the next three years.
