France's highest appellate court has upheld the verdict of, among other things, corruption against former President Nicolas Sarkozy,
At the same time, the court ruled that Sarkozy must wear an electronic tag for a year – which is the first time a former head of state in France has been sentenced to such a punishment. Sarkozy is also not allowed to stand in political elections for the next three years.
The 69-year-old Sarkozy says through his lawyer Patrice Spinosi that he wants to take the verdict to the European Court.
The legal case concerns irregularities in the financing of Sarkozy's election campaign in 2012, when he hoped to be re-elected as president.
Sarkozy was President of France between 2007 and 2012.
