French prosecutors want the former President Nicolas Sarkozy to be sentenced to seven years in prison in a trial where he is accused of having received illegal campaign funds from the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Sarkozy was President from 2007 to 2012 and has previously been convicted of, among other things, corruption and is serving a sentence where he wears an electronic ankle tag.

According to the allegations, it was during the presidential campaign in 2007 that money was received from Gaddafi's government.

The prosecutors also believe that the former President should be fined 300,000 euros, equivalent to approximately 3.2 million kronor, and be banned from holding an elected position for five years.

Sarkozy denies the allegations.
