Sarkozy was sentenced in September for having received bribes from Libya's former dictator Muammar Gaddafi for his re-election campaign.
He is now to report to La Sante prison in Paris on October 21. The verdict is appealed, but while he waits for a new trial, he will begin his five-year prison sentence, according to AFP.
Sarkozy has previously been sentenced for corruption to one year in prison, but the sentence was converted to three months with an ankle monitor and a suspended sentence.
The trial in a higher court is expected within two months.
