permanent uppehållstillstånd (PUT)

A residence permit without an end date. It lets you live and work in Sweden for as long as you are resident here, but Migrationsverket can revoke it if you move away or stay abroad for a long time.

Until now people with many kinds of temporary permits could apply for it after some years, usually together with an extension. In 2026 the rules started to change: from 12 July 2026 the possibility of a permanent permit for people with asylum-related residence permits was removed, and the new citizenship rules mean some people can apply for citizenship without one. People who already have a permanent permit are not affected.
