What's new with the driver's license?
The Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) has previously communicated about the change to the driver's license. If you already have a driver's license, you don't need to do anything, and the old license will be phased out gradually and replaced with the new one.
It has a new design and some security details have been changed. The sample driver's license has an AI-generated woman as a profile picture with the name Anna Andersson.
Digital driver's license?
In the Nordic countries, Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland, there is a digital version of the driver's license. There are inquiries and also a parliamentary motion about introducing digital driver's licenses. A discussion is currently taking place at the EU level regarding driver's license regulations that include digital driver's licenses, and the Transport Agency will wait for the outcome of that investigation before making a decision on digital driver's licenses.
The driver's license as an international ID document in the EU
Unfortunately, the Swedish driver's license lacks the necessary information to be used as an international ID document and travel document within the EU.
