Trump suggests in a post on his platform Truth Social that he does not accept China's growing influence over the canal, which connects the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic.

"We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands", writes Trump.

He further threatens that the USA will take back control of the canal, which was completed by the USA in 1914 and returned to Panama after an agreement signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1977.

"If the principles, both moral and legal, for this generous gift are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us", writes Trump.

Panama took full control of the canal in 1999.
