A suspected perpetrator has disappeared after two people were shot dead in the countryside in northern Austria. One of the people killed was the mayor of a town in the area.
The two people were found dead at different locations in the Mühlviertel region on Monday morning. A large police operation was launched, large areas were cordoned off, and several helicopters participated in the search for a suspected shooter.
The police have identified a 56-year-old man as a suspect. The public is warned not to contact him as he is believed to be armed and dangerous. By Tuesday morning, no traces of the man had been found.
According to Austrian media, there is much to suggest that the murders took place against the backdrop of a conflict among local hunters.
