American importers are stocking up on Italian prosecco with concerns that the wine may be subject to increased tariffs.
In November, Italian exports of sparkling wines increased by 41 percent, clearly exceeding demand, according to the wine producers' trade organization in Italy. The vast majority of this sparkling wine is prosecco. The import had started growing slowly earlier in 2024.
Almost a quarter of Italy's wine exports go to the USA, according to the organization, which emphasizes that their industry is therefore particularly vulnerable in a situation where US President Donald Trump is feared to raise tariffs against the EU.
Last year, prosecco was the most popular Italian wine among Americans, including both still and sparkling wines.
