A family in America is suing Nasa after space debris fell from space and smashed the roof of their home in Florida, according to the law firm representing the family.

The family is demanding Nasa pay approximately 840 000 kronor. According to the law firm, space debris has become an increasingly large problem due to increased space traffic.

Nasa has previously confirmed that the 700-gram piece of debris was part of a load of expired batteries that were jettisoned from the International Space Station (ISS) in 2021. Part of the load did not burn up when it entered the atmosphere.

No one was injured when the piece of debris hit the house in Florida on 8 March this year. However, according to the lawsuit, one of the family's children was at home at the time and the debris could have resulted in "serious injury or death".
