Which charges that may become relevant are unclear, and it is also unclear who or whom they will be directed towards. However, the charges will be the result of an ongoing FBI investigation, where Iran, by several American authorities, has been pointed out as responsible.

Iran "is putting more effort into influencing this year's election compared to previous election cycles, and the activity from the Iranian side is becoming increasingly aggressive as the election approaches", said the US Deputy Attorney General Matthew Olsen in a speech in New York on Thursday.

The FBI has previously stated that the attack, which was announced in August, was part of a broader strategy from Tehran, aimed at influencing American politics and undermining trust in democratic institutions.

The Islamic regime is also said to have attempted to carry out attacks on Kamala Harris' campaign.

Iran's UN delegation has previously denied involvement and stated that they lack motivation to interfere in the American presidential election.
