During the first half of 2024, the number of reported frost damages to Folksam increased by a whole 132 percent, compared to the same period last year. This is evident from figures compiled by the insurance company.

We had a very harsh winter throughout the country and it shows in the statistics. The most common damage occurs when water in the pipes freezes and expands. We often see how entire piping systems, floor drains, and water locks have burst, says Erik Arvidsson, damage prevention expert at Folksam.

Frost damages can be an expensive story and the deductible is high. Moreover, prolonged renovations can make it impossible to use the house for a long time. Fortunately, the damages can be prevented.

It is important to maintain a certain basic temperature in the house throughout the winter, and to turn off the water. Moreover, one needs to keep an eye on one's house even during the winter season, says Erik Arvidsson.

He also urges vigilance in connection with generational changes.

It is often someone who has taken care of this for years and then hands over the house to the next generation. If something important is missed and it becomes a harsh winter, one can get an unpleasant surprise, says Erik Arvidsson.

Maintain some heating – at least 10 degrees in basic heating. In kitchens and bathrooms, the temperature should be around 15 degrees.

Turn off the water – both the main valve and the water supply to dishwashers and washing machines.

Piping systems: Drain piping systems, water heaters, and flush cisterns.

Sinks, showers, and dishwashers: Open the water taps and keep them open over the winter.

Check windows and doors – make sure the insulation is good.
