Aleksandr Drozdenko, governor of the region still called Leningrad, states on his Telegram channel that the accident was caused by "a human mistake" in connection with the start of the engines.

No one in the crew was injured, reports the news site Fontanka. The engine room suffered damage, but it is not reported from Russian sources that there is any risk of oil leaking out.

Despite this, Finland has raised its preparedness for oil spills, writes Prime Minister Petteri Orpo on X. Finnish authorities are also investigating the incident on their own part.

Ust-Luga is one of Russia's most important ports for exporting fossil fuels, which in turn finance the Ukraine war. Ukraine has several times attempted to attack ships and installations in the port.
