In the Tidö Agreement, the government and the SD established that a “new equivalent school grant” should be introduced. In a first report this summer, it was proposed, among other things, that the municipalities should be allowed to make a six percent deduction from the school grant to independent schools. This was justified by the fact that the municipalities have overall responsibility for school operations, and thus higher costs.
But the proposed "free school deduction" has been rejected by the Moderates and the Christian Democrats, who lack credible calculations, reports Dagens Samhälle .
This does not mean that the proposal has been thrown in the trash, claims Minister of Upper Secondary Education, Higher Education and Research Lotta Edholm (L) in several media outlets. She emphasizes that the government, on the contrary, “agrees that state control over school funding should increase.” She further comments :
"The liberals see the problems with the disorder in the independent school system, if moderate members of parliament make a different analysis, Swedish students risk becoming losers."
At the same time, the governing parties seem to agree that it will be difficult, if not impossible, to present a proposal before the election. What also speaks in favor of this is that the final report on school fees has not been ordered until November 1, 2026.
