Thick black smoke rises from the southern Lebanese city of Tyre after repeated Israeli airstrikes. Among other things, a "hostile drone" is said to have been directed at a "street in Tyre", according to Lebanese media. No deaths have been reported from the ancient port city, but in nearby Maarakeh, three people have been killed, according to the country's state news agency NNA.

There, the residents had not had time to take cover in the same way as in Tyre, where Israel issued an evacuation order early on Tuesday.

Israel reported on Wednesday that three local commanders within Hezbollah and about 70 "operatives" had been killed, according to information from the army to the newspaper Haaretz. The commanders are said to have operated in Jibchit, Jouaiya and Qana, where Israeli soldiers claim to have found "underground infrastructure", weapons, rocket launchers and robots.

Downed rockets

In Tel Aviv and other places in central and northern Israel, air raid sirens sound. Rockets and drones from both Lebanon and Syria are reported to have been shot down, according to media and Israel's military.

Hezbollah claims in a statement that they attacked the military intelligence base Glilot in Tel Aviv's suburbs with "a rocket salvo". The base has been a target for attacks several times in recent days.

Smoke was seen over the hotel where US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is staying during his visit to Israel; according to the news agency AP, it was smoke development after a downed rocket.

At least three Israeli attacks have been directed at Beirut's southern suburbs during the night, according to reports in Lebanese media. The attacks came after calls for residents to evacuate.

The area has been regularly bombarded since Israel intensified its offensive against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon last month.

Fell apart

Late on Tuesday, Israel confirmed that it had killed Hashem Safieddine, believed to succeed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in a bomb attack against southern Beirut on September 27.

The Islamist movement confirmed Safieddine's death on Wednesday.

"We mourn the leader of Hezbollah's executive council", wrote Hezbollah in a statement.

Israel carried out attacks on Lebanon also earlier on Tuesday. Among other things, a multi-story building collapsed after being hit by an Israeli robot, just minutes after Hezbollah had held a press conference in the same area.
