Nine people, including two children, have been injured in a shooting at a water park in Michigan, USA.
An eight-year-old boy has life-threatening injuries after being shot in the head.
The shooting occurred at a water park, where many families had gathered to cool off on a hot Saturday afternoon. Nine people were injured, including at least two children, reports AP.
The eight-year-old boy was hit in the head and has life-threatening injuries. According to Michael Bouchard, sheriff of Oakland County, the boy's mother is also in a critical condition after being shot in the stomach. The boy's four-year-old brother was injured in the leg, but his condition is stable.
The other six people hit by the bullets, all over 30 years old, are all in a stable condition.
The police were alerted to the water park in a city park in Rochester Hills – a spot with a non-slip surface where people can set off fountains and water sprinklers to play in – just after 5 pm local time.
"Randomly"
Twenty-eight shots were fired, according to Michael Bouchard. He says the shooter drove to the location in a car, got out and shot at the playground.
It seems very random. No connection to the victims, says Bouchard, reports BNO News.
Shooter dead
The suspected shooter was soon tracked down to a nearby house, which was surrounded by a SWAT team. When the police couldn't make contact with the suspected shooter, a drone was used, and when they finally entered the house, the person was found dead after taking their own life, reports AP.
Rochester Hills is about two miles south of Oxford, where a 15-year-old shot and killed four high school students in 2021. Michael Bouchard calls the shooting at the water park "a punch in the gut".
We've been through so many tragedies. We've barely taken in what happened in Oxford, and now we have another tragedy to deal with, he says.
