It was a plus on Chinese stock exchanges after a few hours of trading on Thursday, but a minus for leading indexes in Japan.
The composite indexes in Shanghai and Shenzhen were up 0.4 and 1.1 percent, respectively, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was up 0.5 percent.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index was down 0.6 percent and the broader Topix was down 0.5 percent.
In South Korea, the Kospi had fallen by 0.8 percent.
