The tech giant Microsoft is to invest a staggering 80 billion dollars, equivalent to nearly 900 billion Swedish kronor, in the expansion of various data centers linked to AI operations. More than half of the investments are to be made already this half-year, the company announced in a blog update.

Both Microsoft and Amazon have recently initiated massive investments to build out their AI capacity. Both Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have also signed agreements to take part of the electricity produced from nuclear power plants to drive the new massive investments.

In Microsoft's case, it's about entering into an agreement with the company that owns the decommissioned nuclear power plant Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, USA, known from the Harrisburg accident in 1979. One of the two reactors was unaffected by the meltdown. The plan is to put it back into operation and for Microsoft to receive the electricity produced.
