The report, which is being published in excerpts in the daily newspaper Il Messaggero, describes Libya as a powder keg that threatens to explode and there are fears that the war between militia groups in the country risks making human trafficking uncontrollable.
"The Sahel is in the hands of illegal human trafficking, fuel, drugs, and, more recently, weapons, which is fueled by the fact that Libya appears unable to control the trade."
The number of migrants arriving in Italy has increased after the turn of the year. Since the beginning of January, 4,144 people have fled to Italy across the Mediterranean, compared to 3,169 during the same period in 2023. Most come from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Syria.
