"If the purpose of the negotiations is to address concerns about the possible militarization of Iran's nuclear energy program, such discussions can be considered", writes Iran's UN delegation on X.
If the goal of the negotiations, on the other hand, is to "dismantle Iran's peaceful nuclear energy program, in order to claim that what Obama failed to achieve has now been achieved, such negotiations will never take place", according to the Iranian UN delegation.
The latter refers to the agreement that several countries signed with Iran in 2015, when Barack Obama was president. The agreement involved sanctions relief in exchange for limitations on Iran's nuclear technology program.
President Donald Trump abandoned the agreement in 2018 during his first term.
Iran's opening for new talks comes after the recent pressure from Trump, where he said that it may become necessary to "go in militarily" if negotiations fail. Trump is said to have expressed this in a letter to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
