The proposal was presented by the conservative opposition CDU-CSU and was supported by, among others, Alternative for Germany (AFD), which broke a long-standing taboo on cooperation with the far-right party.
The proposal was adopted with 348 yes-votes, 345 no-votes, and 10 abstentions.
The resolution is not binding, but urges the government to introduce permanent border controls and reject all those who attempt to enter the country illegally, including those seeking asylum. Existing European regulations on migration and asylum are described as "clearly dysfunctional".
Despite criticizing AFD for using migration problems to spread conspiracy theories and xenophobia, the party backed the resolution. The cooperation between the conservatives and AFD is condemned by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (S).
