We've been invited, but we've chosen to stay home. We wanted to go, but our dog can't handle it. Our dog can't handle the noise from fireworks and firecrackers. One loud bang and we have to carry him home, and he shakes and hides under beds and tables.
I've heard that one-third of all dogs suffer from this to some extent. So, how do you handle New Year's Eve? Here are my 9 best tips:
- Leave the city over the New Year's weekend. Rent a house far out in the countryside, far away from all the New Year's celebrations and noise.
- Celebrate New Year's Eve in your car at an airport parking lot. You're not allowed to set off fireworks or rockets near an airport.
- Identify the room in your home that is least exposed to outside noise. Probably the basement, and prepare to celebrate New Year's there.
- Take only short walks during New Year's Eve, just so your dog can go to the bathroom. The more firework noises your dog hears during a walk, the worse the reaction and the harder it is to handle.
- Create a calm atmosphere at home on New Year's Eve. Be only with family and try to distract your dog from anxiety.
- Play background music at home that helps to mask and camouflage outside noises.
- Teach your dog to handle firework noises by gradually exposing them to these sounds. Combine the noise with treats and other stimuli in moderate doses. However, this takes time to learn. Count on several months.
- Don't react yourself to firework noises or fireworks. Your dog looks up to you and takes after your behavior.
- Most importantly, comfort your dog if they get scared. Be their safe haven.
Wishing all dog owners out there a happy new year!
