Netanyahu: Israel Expands War Goals

Israelis who were forced to flee from the country's northern parts after shelling from Hezbollah in Lebanon should be able to return safely, emphasizes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The statement about an expanded goal for the war comes ahead of the American foreign minister's planned visit to Cairo.

"The Security Council updated the war goals this evening to include the following section: A safe return for residents in the north to their homes," says Netanyahu's office in a statement.

Since the war in Gaza broke out following Hamas' terror attack on October 7, Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon have been attacking each other on a daily basis. This has forced many people to flee their homes.

The announcement of the expanded war goals comes hours after the US State Department announced that Foreign Minister Antony Blinken will travel to Egypt later in the week to discuss efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza war.

The visit will be Blinken's tenth to the region since the outbreak of war on October 7 last year.

Hamas and Israel have repeatedly accused each other of sabotaging the negotiations, and Netanyahu has repeatedly said that the war will not end until the country's goals have been achieved.
