The group leaders for all parties – including the Sweden Democrats – give a unanimous answer in Aftonbladet's survey: all members are invited to this week's votes.

"This may mean that planned trips and other commitments need to be rescheduled," notes Mattias Karlsson, group leader for the Moderates.

Liberal Party group leader Lina Nordquist also says that plans must be scrapped.

"Of course, important business trips need to be canceled. The situation also creates difficulties in case of illness."

There is no alternative to a total attendance obligation, according to Green Party group leader Annika Hirvonen:

"After SD, through its deceitful actions, broke the offsetting agreement, this is the only reasonable consequence."

The agreement on compensation is in place to avoid imbalances between the blocs during voting. When members are absent for various reasons, they are offset by an equal number from another party.

But when the SD realized on Wednesday that two defectors would vote with the opposition on a controversial proposal on citizenship, the party chose to call in two members.

Now all Sweden Democrats must also be present in the chamber during votes. Group leader Linda Lindberg does not believe that the offsetting system will be resumed.

"I believe a new agreement will be reached. It is my ambition that it be done and I am more than happy to be constructive in that work," Lindberg tells Aftonbladet.

Facts: The Riksdag's offsetting system

The offsetting system is an agreement between the parties, primarily between the blocs, that absent members shall not affect the balance of power in votes in the Riksdag.

If one or more members cannot attend, they are offset by a member of another party who abstains from voting.

The system has been used since at least the early 20th century. However, the SD was not allowed into the system until 2021, eleven years after entering parliament.
