Grand is a cinema on Sveavägen with a past that begins as a church property. It belonged to the Pentecostal Church in Stockholm before cinema magnate Anders Sandrew bought it and turned it into a movie theater in 1933. The building has been modernized several times since then, but some of its design details remain. Visit Stockholm names the ornate intarsia doors leading into the main auditorium as one example. The doors are a specific surviving feature to look for on the way into the auditorium.
Grand is also linked to the murder of Prime Minister Olof Palme. On 26 February 1986, Palme watched The Mozart Brothers at the cinema before he was murdered. Visit Stockholm says Grand is infamous for that connection. The cinema’s history brings together its earlier use as a church property, its conversion into a movie theater and the surviving details in its main auditorium. Its name is also associated with Palme’s visit to see a film there before his murder.
