Kura skymning at Norrtälje City Library centres on a reading of Johannes Anyuru’s 2017 novel De kommer att drunkna i sina mödrars tårar. The evening begins with a short introduction to the author, followed by a reading by Staffan Engstrand.
The novel imagines a future, divided Sweden after a terrorist attack at a bookshop during a talk by a controversial cartoonist. A girl who filmed the attack is later admitted to a forensic psychiatric clinic, where she contacts a writer and says she comes from that future Sweden. Her account leads him to reflect on his life, belonging and the society around him. The novel examines distrust and exclusion, alongside hope, freedom and the power of language. It also considers what Sweden might become if its democratic values are not protected.
For visitors interested in literature, the reading offers a way to encounter a speculative story about Sweden and its democratic society.
