Sagobygden, also called the Land of Legends, is a destination for exploring folklore and legendary places in southwest Småland. The journey covers Ljungby, Alvesta and Älmhult municipalities, where stories are tied to places and nature. Much of Sweden’s oral tradition was written down in this part of Småland, according to the organisation behind the destination.

Visitors can explore places associated with trolls, giants, spirits and other figures from folklore. The stories connect to mountains said to belong to trolls, rocks linked to giants, holy springs, waters of the Necken, dragons’ treasures and magic trees. The destination also includes places connected with tragic deaths and haunted country manors. Its sites offer a way to encounter local cultural heritage and learn about people’s lives in the past.

The stories were passed on by word of mouth. The region was also home to storytellers and collectors of fairy tales. Sagobygden presents nature and cultural heritage together, through a journey among scenic spots and legendary places. It is part of the non-profit Storytelling Network of Kronoberg.
