Gränna Church stands in central Gränna and dominates the town’s profile. The first church on the site was built in the 12th century. Most of it was destroyed in a fire in 1889, and the present church was inaugurated in 1895 on the remains of the original stone church. Its foundations are preserved beneath the floor.
The new church was built in a baroque style. Inside, large white surfaces and tall windows give the room a restrained look. Three windows in the chancel show scenes from Jesus’s final days: the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. Some furnishings survived the fire, including a medieval baptismal font and sacrament cabinet, an altarpiece, church silver and chandeliers. A sandstone window, probably from the medieval church, is set into one of the walls.
The church is usually open to visitors from late June to early August, when a host is present. The summer programme includes guided tours, music and simple coffee service. That usual visitor season has ended for the year. An old cemetery surrounds the church; it stopped being used for burials in 1868 and has since returned to use.
