Motala Church is the congregation’s main church. Parts of the masonry from an earlier church remain in its walls; the church’s website dates that building to the first half of the 13th century. The present church was largely complete by 1774, after an enlargement in the 18th century.
Visitors can see furnishings from different periods, including a six-branched chandelier from the 17th century and other chandeliers dated 1753, 1774 and 1776. The church also has two organs: a choir organ with 12 stops, installed in 1985, and a gallery organ with 45 stops and 2,546 pipes, installed in 1999. Its textiles include eight vestments by Sten Kauppi and one by French artist Alfred Manessier.
The church is open for individual prayer Monday to Wednesday from 09:00 to 16:00, Thursday from 10:00 to 16:00, Friday from 09:00 to 16:00 and Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00. A service is usually held at 11:00 on public holidays. Services often include a procession, singing and instrumental music; the Gospel is read among the congregation. The website gives no admission price or recommended visit length.
